The accepted wisdom, when it comes to capturing lightning, is to put your camera on a tripod and set a very long shutter. Ten seconds, fifteen, or longer. Leave the shutter open and hope that you’re facing the right way when lightning strikes. This normally how I do it, but in late 2014 I was standing in my back yard and the flashes of lightning were huge, real skullcrackers. I was feeling ambitious so I thought I’d try and capture a flash handheld, with a short shutter speed.

And so this shot, the only successful one in about ten tries, was one of the best luckiest shots I’ve ever taken. 1/80th of a second, pushing the shutter when I saw the flash of light.
