I had a half dozen images in my head, I knew the location, I knew the angles and the composition and I knew what editing I’d be doing when it was all wrapped up. But I failed to consider a few things.

When Kat and I arrived at the location, the first shot we set up was one where I was hoping for a walking wisp, a bush spirit flitting between trees. But it became quickly apparent that some things can’t be made to flit.

What I didn’t consider before heading out was that it’s really difficult to wrap a piece of satin around a body in such a way that it looks any kind of good. It kept slipping off, hiding too much of my beautiful model or nothing at all. She couldn’t move in any kind of dramatic fashion and keep the fabric under control at the same time. And we started in a spot bathed in full sunlight. It wasn’t super warm that day, the shade under trees was very cool, but standing in the sun – even under brilliant white light-reflecting satin – was incredibly warm. My poor model melted in the first 10 minutes.

And that set the tone for the day. It was uncomfortable and the satin wouldn’t cooperate. This next shot almost worked well, except that you can barely tell there’s a beautiful body under there. It’s less of a Siren of the Woods and more of a vaguely felt ghost of bedsheets past.

There was another wispy spirit shot that worked much better, and I think it’s sort of neat that it’s a ghostly presence in broad daylight, but it’s still just a person under forty dollars worth of satin.

This next shot is the second most successful from the day, though I do wish there was more malevolent tension in the fingers. What I wanted was ghostly spirit in the distance, a beautiful shade that calls you deeper into the woods. But what I got was Barbed Wire with White Blob. Not quite the right vibe.

Two other shots were discarded pretty quickly. One was quickly obvious that it wasn’t going to work, the other was too much effort at the end of two hours of struggling. And, walking back the two kilometers to the car, we remembered one we forgot.

So, all up, what did I learn?

Work on the material and the posing before heading out into the bush. “What should I do with my hands?” was a question I heard several times that I just didn’t have an answer for. And it turns out hanging loosely at your sides wasn’t the right guess at all.

Other stuff is obvious: don’t stand in the full sun on a summer day. Wear proper shoes for the trek out (I swear I told her!) and maybe don’t worry about makeup when you spend your whole time under a sheet.

I feel like there’s a really solid premise hidden in here somewhere, but I’m going to give it a lot of thought before I give it another go.

This was a tough one.
