One of the first things I noticed is that, aside the marks on the floor and the bruises that I edit out now but didn’t then, is that I used to crop way too tightly<\/b>. The original image is straight out of the camera, no adjustments at all: it’s well lit, but there’s no context<\/i>. I remember very clearly when I had the revelation, sometime between this image in 2012 and now, that I didn’t have to fill the frame with the performer. Giving some space around the body gives it a place. Back in 2012, it felt like the performer was in your face<\/b>.<\/p>\n

In this case it sort of makes sense, because we were shooting in the studio before it was finished, and if I didn’t crop this tightly you’d get a lot of wasted detail in the frame. Like the edge of the paper roll, the bare studio walls, etc:<\/p>\n

Recently someone posted an image from a shoot I did eight years ago, and I asked her if she meant to post the unedited image because it was obviously unfinished. She said the edited image may have been lost because she didn’t know where it was, so I checked my archives and… Well then. Eight years ago I didn’t do any editing<\/i>. Images were shot, the raw files adjusted to taste, and then JPGs were served up to the client.<\/p>\n

So I took that image and edited it, and it’s interesting to see what a difference eight years makes. This particular image didn’t need the pink toning, the original was quite well coloured as it was, but I prefer it over the original and so does the client.
