I think a lot of photographers fall into the details trap. They’re obsessed with the tiniest details, agonizing over specifications and minutiae. I’ve certainly fallen into this before, and it can be a bit of a struggle to break free, because there’s a real seductive quality to hard facts.<\/p>\n

And let’s face it, it’s a lot easier to convince yourself one thing is better than the other because the numbers are bigger. More pixels, more frames per second, lower quantum coefficient of chromatic aberration. <\/p>\n

But art is a funny thing.<\/p>\n

One of my favourite lenses is a cheap (relatively speaking, it costs about $500 USD) fisheye lens that doesn’t really have superb optical characteristics. There’s some colour fringing on high contrast areas, and it doesn’t really work well on my camera, with a full-frame sensor much larger than the one this lens was designed for. If I use this lens at its widest angles, I can see the edges of the lens itself. <\/p>\n

And it’s a fisheye, I mean, c’mon. <\/p>\n

So it’s a cheap novelty lens with an extremely extreme curvature to every shot and the image quality isn’t spectacular.<\/p>\n

But I can do this with it, and this is fucking cool.<\/p>\n
